Search Engine Optimization Consultant. When I first began working in this field, even saying my job title was a mouthful, let alone explaining to others what exactly it is that I do.
To the less-than-obsessed tech-savvy individual, or rather normal individual, the field of search engine optimization, or SEO, is pretty foreign. The line that evolved became: "You know how when you search for something in Google, you get so many pages of results? I try to help clients get to the top of those results."
After getting passed the amazement that those results aren't something of magic, it became a question of how does one do that?
The field of SEO is, from my perspective, a live and learn field. There is no degree or certification to become an SEO consultant. The variables involved in the job are limitless. And to top it off, the rate of change of these variables is, well, fast.
So there are a few cons of the job, but I believe it is better to think of them as "motivational challenges". Because, in reality, I have come to love working as a Search Engine Optimization Consultant; and I can say the job title now too (with much practice).
There are many pros to the job that should not be ignored; pros that I will be talking about in future posts. These pros that can create a passion for the field include creating new relationships with other webmasters; gaining ends of knowledge about Google, Yahoo, etc.; and spending hours in forums speaking to other SEO fanatics - friendly and helpful people, I promise you.
To put a good word in, a great resource is at www.seochat.com. Amazing community and endless resources are available. If you are interested in the field, or perhaps are aspiring to learn a bit more about it for your own website, SEOChat.com is a perfect starting location for you.
